چکیده

The performance of a computer network is commonly measured by the maximum minimum time required to move a certain amount of data between any 2 nodes in the network. Due to the advances in technology, certain links in the network may be upgraded, for instance to optical fibre links, so that better performance can be achieved. In this paper, we study the LINK UPGRADE problem for networks. We first show that the LINK UPGRADE problem is NP-complete. We also show that, a closely related problem, the MINIMUM COST LINK UPGRADE problem is NP-complete even jf the underlying topology of the network is a linear array. However, for certain classes of networks, the LINK UPGRADE problem can be solved in polynomial time. For general networks, we provide effective heuristics for the above problems.

Upgrading Bottleneck Constrained Forests

We study bottleneck constrained network upgrading problems. We are given an edge weighted graph G = (V; E) where node v 2 V can be upgraded at a cost of c(v). This upgrade reduces the delay of each link emanating from v. The goal is to nd a minimum cost set of nodes to be upgraded so that the resulting network has a good performance. The performance is measured by the bottleneck weight of a con...

Problem Hardness Result Approximation ResultBSTP

Several problems arising in the areas of communication networks and VLSI design can be expressed in the following general form: Enhance the performance of an underlying network by upgrading some of its nodes. We investigate one such problem. Consider a network where nodes represent processors and edges represent bidirectional communication links. The processor at a node v can be upgraded at an ...

Does Inward Foreign Direct Investment Contribute to Skill Upgrading in Developing Countries?

How do multinational firms affect both the demand for and supply of skills in hostcountry labor markets? On the demand side, inward can FDI stimulate demand for moreskilled workers in host countries through several channels. To date, most empirical evidence indicates that these channels work mainly within multinationals themselves, rather than through knowledge spillovers to domestic firms. On ...

Performance of the Wavelet Transform-Neural Network Based Receiver for DPIM in Diffuse Indoor Optical Wireless Links in Presence of Artificial Light Interference

Artificial neural network (ANN) has application in communication engineering in diverse areas such as channel equalization, channel modeling, error control code because of its capability of nonlinear processing, adaptability, and parallel processing. On the other hand, wavelet transform (WT) with both the time and the frequency resolution provides the exact representation of signal in both doma...

Global Commodity Chains & World Income Inequalities: the Missing Link of Inequality & the “upgrading” Paradox

This article links key findings from two major research literatures within contemporary development and globalization studies: global commodity/value chains, and world income inequalities. Forging this missing link exposes what I call the “upgrading paradox” within commodity and value chain analysis. The paradox hinges on the disconnect between the global commodity/value chain literature’s focu...
